What this actually is

Gutters are the part of the roof people notice last and the part that causes the most avoidable damage. A blocked or badly falling gutter backs water up under the first row of tiles, which is the one place the roof was never designed to hold it. From there it goes into the eaves, the fascia and eventually the wall.

Most gutter problems are not holes. They are fall. A gutter that does not run consistently towards a downpipe holds water in the middle of the run, and standing water rusts a gutter from the inside out long before the weather gets it from the outside.

What the job involves

  • Fall set to the downpipes String line and brackets set so every metre of gutter runs somewhere. This is the part that gets skipped.
  • Colorbond, matched to the roof Quad or half-round in a colour that belongs with the roof and the fascia rather than fighting them.
  • Fascia repaired or replaced where needed There is no point hanging a new gutter off rotten timber.
  • Downpipes sized and connected Enough of them, in the right places, actually connected to the stormwater rather than discharging next to your footings.
  • Gutter guard where it earns its keep Aluminium mesh under gums and around leaf-drop trees. Not everywhere, because it is not free and it is not always necessary.

What gutter replacement costs

Guttering is priced by the linear metre, plus the downpipes, plus fascia if the timber behind it has gone. That last one is the variable — you cannot always tell whether the fascia is sound until the old gutter comes off.

If the roof is being done at the same time, gutters are meaningfully cheaper, because the access, the setup and the rubbish removal are already paid for once.

What moves the price:

  • Metres of guttering The base number.
  • Quad, half-round or box Different profiles, different prices, and box gutters are a different job again.
  • How many downpipes Enough of them in the right places, actually connected to stormwater.
  • Fascia condition If the timber behind the gutter has rotted there is no point hanging new gutter off it.
  • Gutter guard Worth it under gums and leaf-drop trees, unnecessary on an open block.
  • Storeys and access Same as all roof work.

How to tell

Signs you need this

Most of these you can check yourself from the ground, before you call anyone.

  • Water spilling over the front in rain Either blocked, or the fall is wrong. Both are fixable.
  • Rust streaks or holes on the inside Standing water. The gutter is failing from the inside.
  • Plants growing in the gutter There is enough soil in there to support a garden, which tells you how long it has been.
  • Peeling paint or rot on the fascia Water is getting behind the gutter and into the timber.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

Twice a year for most houses, and more if you have gums over the roof. Around Parramatta a lot of houses do.

Is gutter guard worth it?

Under heavy leaf drop, yes, it pays for itself in cleaning you no longer need. On a house with nothing overhanging, it is money you did not have to spend. We will tell you which one you are.

Can you do gutters without doing the roof?

Yes. Plenty of gutter jobs are standalone. If we are on the roof anyway there are efficiencies, and we will say so, but there is no requirement to bundle.

My gutters overflow in heavy rain. Do they need replacing?

Not necessarily. Overflowing is usually either a blockage or the fall being wrong, and both can often be fixed without new guttering. Rust from the inside, or holes, is when replacement becomes the answer.
